Hello-
I am curious about something. I am a fairly healthy 27 year old who has trouble sleeping. I've had insomina for years and every doctor that I go to seems to think sleeping pills are horrible & dangerous. I have gotten them to let me try Ambien, Lunesta, & Sonata. (Not at the same time! LOL) They give me a few at a time...which to me seems stupid. I've read of people taking drgs like these for years to get relief. I'm not looking to get addicted to anything, I just need some relief from fatigue. What can I say to get them to give me a regular prescription for a sleeping aid? OTC pills do nothing but make me drowsy the next day. Thanks!

You are young, as you said, and doctors know from experience how many young people with insomnia get hooked on sleeping pills. No one plans to get hooked on them but when you have easy access to them, you end up taking them far more than your realize...until it is too late. It would be far better for you to start training your body to learn to sleep. That is easier said than done but it can be done, you have to really work at it. In case you have never seen the insomnia recommendations, I will post them here but please know that the doctors really are doing what is best for you.

Strategies for coping with insomnia:
avoid or limit caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, especially in the evening.
make sure none of your medications are affecting your sleep
go to bed and get up at the same time EVERY day
save the bed for sleeping and sex only...no tv
exercise daily at least 4 hours before bedtime
limit bedtime to 8 hours
do not nap
relax in the evenings...don't do anything stimulating
eat meals at regular times
try to avoid a bedtime snack
when in bed, concentrate on relaxing
get lots of sunshine
keep your bedroom quiet, dark, and cool
try a sleep mask
avoid beverages at night
try using white noise

It might help to try and keep a sleep diary so that you can document your sleep issues. Contact me for more info on this if you want to spend the time doing it.

Sleeping pills can be used only if prescribed by the doctor, since he shall check ur age, health conditions and requirement of the power of the sleeping pills... I too got from the doctor's advice rather than across the counter at the medical shop.. He asked me not to continue after 10-20 days.. Since i might get addicted to it.. So Jus go to ur doctor.... All will be fine
