In America, this usually refers to the years after high school... when a young person attends college or takes their first job. They may not be fully independent yet though. And they may not have all the full rights of adults, such as being able to drink, etc.

Trends are changing and young people are depending on their parents for longer periods of time. So, post-adolesence might have previously been estimated to be ages 18-21 or 18-23, now may stretch into their late twenties or early thirties.
