If the kitty is strictly an indoor cat, try these:

If the cat is indoor/outdoor you may be back to wrapping your furniture up.
Good luck.

Turbo Scratchers. Available at Wal-Mart, Kmart, and most pet stores. The pads are replaceable and the complete with a ball that the cat can chase around the edge of the saucer. (We have 2 of them but the kids still have to be reminded to stay off the furniture for sharpening.) They also have a small pack of catnip in them that you sprinkle on the pad to get them more interested.
Also you can flip the pads over when they get to tore up and save a little money that way. It is a whole lot cheaper than the scratching poles, too.

I put thick tape around the areas they scratch. They don't like that feeling on their nails! It seems to be working. Another thing I've tried- prop up the scratcher against the furniture. A lot of the time they just want to stretch up and dig on something taller than them.

Try sprinkling cat nip on the posts to encourage them to play with the posts. There is also repellant spray that can be sprayed on furniture or anything to repell your animals from furniture or anything. There is also the option of a product called "Soft Paws." These are plastic caps that can be put on your cats claws so that their claws aren't scratching the furniture. Ask your veterinarian about them. Where I work, our veterinarian keeps them on hand and shows people how to put them on. Good Luck

Cats don't like 2 things, for sure, besides some of the things you already read here.
They don't like the feel of tin foil. Attractive on your furniture, huh!
The truly don't like bubble wrap. Stick it under and up the places where they scratch. The reaction they get when they scratch makes them think twice before going at it again.
Also quite attractive!
I remove the bubble wrap when people come to visit.

Hi,
If you go to your local pet store they should have a special double sided tape. You stick it to wear the cats scratch the cats dislike the sticky feeling and will stop scratching the couch. Also get some catnip spray for your posts, that should help.

From experience I can tell you that if you cover one thing they like to scratch they will always find another. Nothing that covered furniture e3ver worked for me the best thing for me and for only cats that are house cats is to keep there claws cut it's not cruel and it doesn't hurt them anymore than it hurts us to get our nails cut. There is the option of getting them declawed if all else fails. Good Luck!!!

Spray bottle. It's God's gift to people for cats!! LOL They hate the spray bottle, so whenever they are doing ANYTHING you don't want them to do, spray them. When they do something that you want them to be doing, give them a treat, and praise them like crazy!
Do your cats know what the scratchers are for? If not, try taking their paws and squeezing their claws out(which does not hurt the in the least!!!!!), and make them use scratching post, then praise them for doing it! They will get the hint eventuall; "Hey! if we use this, we get a treat! If we use anything else, we get sprayed! Maybe we should just stick to the post!"
Nothing in this answer is cruel, painful, or inhumane! The link below has some tips, and agrees with what I've said(for the most part lol).

I bought a "Super Scratcher", (its cardboard with catnip) from WalMart for less than 5 bucks, my cat hasn't clawed any furniture since, he scratches it, gets high, and takes a nap

we have a turbo scratcher and the cat does use it but the furniture is still a target...if you have the time to use "bad cat spray" aka clean water in a spray bottle to use whenever the cat goes for the furniture then "spritz" the cat
