HemphillJay,
The spelling suggests that the title to this composition may be Appalachian Cultural Folklore express/transmission.
For example, I interpret this title as saying,
"Dirty Poison Pete's Mistake,"and this seems to indicate that Billy the Kid may have been spawned by dirty poison pete; thus his (Pete's) mistake.
Appalachian Folk use the expressed word of "pissin" as a reference to poison, and the word "Ditty (Dirty)" would seem to correlate with pissin in Folk Speech.
Would Billy the Kid have Appalachian origins?
I will look into more background about Billy and any literary compositions that may refer to him as I make way along Life's Drifts.
Well, I followed a website that indicates that Billy was born in New York; however, written documentation has eluded to this day.
New York is at the northern edge of Appalachia (named by Spanish explorer DeSoto from the Indian Tribe of Florida called the Appalachy Indians).
