I just bought the Sony MemoryStick Pro Duo. I know that you put the card into the camera, but what is the longer part for?/?????

Also, how many pictures does this card let me put onto my camera?

There were two items in the box; the actual card and a Memory Stick Duo Adaptor. What does this adaptor do?

The actual memory card you got is a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo. "Duo" is Sony's code-name for its new revised Memory Stick form factor (or size). At first when the Memory Stick was invented by Sony, it was just Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro. This looked like the longer part you are talking about.

However, after technologies changed, Sony learned to make it much much smaller, which resulted in Memory Stick Duo / Memory Stick Pro Duo. So Sony's newer cameras, handycams, everything began to come out with support for the Duo cards.

During this stage, Sony also wanted to make sure that the Duo Cards were backward compatible with older card slots. That means they had to find a way to make the smaller duo cards fit into the bigger older card-slots. Otherwise this would be a big cheating they would be doing against its older customers.

This resulted in the invention of the Memory Stick Duo Adapter. Using this, you can easily insert the new duo cards into the adaptor, and make it work on devices supporting the older and larger Memory Card formats!!!! Thats why Sony supplies such an adaptor with every memory card it sells... to ensure backward-compatibilty.

Hope I answered the question.... :)

sony memory stick pro duo, the contents of the package comes with the memory stick itself and the adaptor. If thats the longer part ur talkin' about well you wont be needing it til you want to develop ur pictures at walmart or walgreens which they have this print machines for pictures to be developed because they have this different slots for different kinds of memory sticks. The sony slot is smaller, Thats where the adaptor comes handy, Put your memory stick into the adaptor and you'll see that it will fit perfectly..

-Picture quantity:
256mb approx 150+
512mb approx 250+
1G approx 500+
2G approx 800+
(im really not sure its just an estimate)

Tip: It has a cheaper version and it pretty much the same quality as Sony's. Try A Sandisk memory stick pro duo, its cheaper just be sure that you get the exact stick.. aight gurl? good luck!

Some of sonys otehr products ... pda's mps .. etc .. use memory sticks not memory stick duos ... so they give you an adaptor so you can use it in those devices. Also for most printers .... you need to use the adaptor , so its good to hold on to.. just incase
