My dad used to tell us that in the old days he had to memorize word for word and page for page on everything he learned in school. He was very proud of himself and therefore tried to enforce the same method onto me when I was young. It did not work well for me. I don't quite understand the point of having to memorize everything word for word. What happen to paraphrasing, memorizing the key points?

Yes, in fact, there are many Christian martyrs, in China for example, who memorized large parts of the Bible (or the whole Bible) because being caught with a Bible could mean jail time or even death.
By the by, I have met Muslims who memorized a good bit of the Quran but not the whole Quran. I would suppose there are few except the most dedicated and deepest scholars who would either have the time or the inclination to memorize the whole book.
Most Muslims I have met have specific parts memorized.
Perhaps a Muslim would like to offer more reliable insight on the subject. Not being Muslim, I don't want to speak for them. I only speak from personal experience.

I think you mean "by heart" or "by memory". The answer is yes, many Christians can quote verses, passages, and even whole chapters of the Bible by heart. Some have to work very hard at it, but to some it comes easy. The old King James Version in English seems easier to memorize than the modern versions, because the sound of it sets itself apart in your mind from the modern speech patterns you use every day.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have memorized the Qu'ran in its entirety. This people have the special title of "Hafiz"
this literally means "preserver". I have yet to find someone or hear of someone who has memorized the entire bible. The Qu'ran is 6666 verses, of various lengths. Most people start this process in childhood, going to special schools to do so (my cousin did this). My parents wanted me too as well, by my Grandmother warned that if one memorized the entire Qu'ran and then forgets it, then it is more of a sin, then not having memorized it all. So most Muslims have the parts necessary for prayer memorized.
This may be interesting,
[054:032] And indeed, We have made the Qur'ân easy to understand and remember; then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?

Many people have memorized large portions of the Bible. A great Bible teacher, Dr. Henry Halley, memorized whole books of the Bible, and could recite them at will. I'm not so good, but I have been able to remember many verses, especially ones that have special meaning to me. David said in the Psalms, "Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee." Its a good thing.

most muslim families have at least one hafiz (person who memorizes Quran) and they memorize it in the whole. My grandfather was one and so is my cousin. I hope to be one one day also InshAllah.
