I don't know how to get there on say an Apple computer, but there is a simple way to get there in all PC's running DOS or Windows operating systems: Hold down the left-side ALT key, pres 2 then 4 then 8 on the numeric keypad, then release the ALT key (so it is ALT-248)

That types this symbol: °
ALT-0176 types this one: °

I am not sure what is different between the two, but I suspect the four-digit code is a more advanced character set added to later versions of Windows.

Here are some other cool characters you can get this way:

ALT-156 = £
ALT-171 = ½
ALT-172 = ¼
ALT-241 = ±
ALT-246 = ÷
ALT-253 = ²

Hold down the Alt button and type 0176 on the number keypad(not the numbers at the top of the keyboard) then let go of the Alt button, and the degree symbol should appear like this: °
