It is a painful disease but I'll bet by the time of death you are unconscious. My daughter had meningitis when she was small and it was very painful and she was OK though after. I hope that you are not dealing with this over a loved one. If they are dead then they are certainly at peace now. Hold onto that.

That is an infection and can be life threatening when not treated.
Guess that would depend upon the treatment administered.
