My boyfriend & I have no relationship problems, but I'm an only child whose parents don't speak English and my boyfriend does not speak my parents' language. My parents are upset and disappointed that I am with someone who can't communicate with them. They say that my choosing him without first consulting them undermines their reason for moving to the US and all the sacrifices they've made for me. They've lost sleep over this and they say that I have more choice in this situation than they do. I'm young and can choose someone else to be with, but they have only me as their child. I have taught my boyfriend some things to say, but it's hard for me to ask him to learn more. They also say that the fact that both his parents are divorcees is a red flag. I've even considered breaking up because I want my future husband and parents to have a good relationship with each other. My parents and my boyfriend deserve happiness and fulfillment in their lives. Your thoughts? Any help is appreciated!

My question is do you love your parents? Then you have the answer. Don't let someone or somebody come between you and your parents. When they are dead you will regret it. Love them and cherish them while there here on this earth . Why don't you try to teach your boyfriend the language that your parents speak.

How old are you? I ask this because if you are young, it may not seem that you will find someone else that you like as much. But if you are young, you have plenty of time to. If you boyfriend respects your culture and tries to learn more about it, stay with him. If he is not respectful of your culture and heritage, drop him.

Your parents will ALWAYS be your parents. You will likely break up with your "boy"friend eventually. It seems a no-brainer to me.
