I did a little research for you, and here is the true story. From the Qu'ran, and the hadith (saying of the Prophet) which relate with it.

[005:027] And (O Muhammad [Peace Be Upon Him]) recite to them (the Jews) the story of the two sons of Adam (Hâbîl and Qâbîl – Abel and Cain) in truth; when each offered a sacrifice (to God), it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former: "I will surely, kill you." The former said: "Verily, God accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious. See V.2:2)."

(V.5:27) a) Narrated 'Abdullâh [May God be Pleased with Him]: The Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] said, "None (no human being) is killed or murdered (unjustly), but a part of responsibility for the crime is laid on the first son of Adam who invented the tradition of killing (murdering) on the earth. (It is said that he was Qâbîl [Cain])." [Sahih Al-Bukhâri, 9/6867 (O.P.6)]

b) Narrated 'Abdullâh bin 'Umar [May God be Pleased with Him]: The Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] said, "After me (i.e., after my death) do not become disbelievers by striking (cutting) the necks of one another." [Sahih Al-Bukhâri, 9/6868 (O.P.7)].
