There are many meditation practises in use. Some useful, some not so useful at all. As a Buddhist perhaps some insight from a Buddhist perspective on some of the 40 Meditations would be beneficial, if you'll allow me to contribute.
Meditation is a practice performed for a specific purpose. Its purpose is for concentrated correct contemplation. It is an exercise for the mind. Meditation attempted without guidance and without purpose is just resting the body.
As a Buddhist I meditate to perform a specific task. Usually I am examining a paricular negative emotional impact. I use meditation techniques to calm my mind and eliminate any external or irrelevent thoughts. Once I have control of my thoughts then I can begin. Sometimes there are just too many distractions or my mind is too busy with unrelated thoughts that I find it necessary to stop for that time and allow my mind to clear.
If I am able to reach the stage of controlling my thoughts, I then gather them into a coherent form and concentrate on the thoughts related to the problem I'm examining. I then get a clear understanding of the effects that the thing I'm examining is having on me emotionally and consider the ways of negating those effects.
All of this requires a great deal of effort and concentration and at the end of the session...sometimes I have meditated for 2 or 3 hours....I generally rest or sleep to allow my mind its freedom to wander again.
That's how meditation works. It generally requires proper training in the techniques to be able to concentrate the minds focus properly, otherwise you won't be able to control your thoughts enough to examine anything.
I hope that this answers your question...
Peace from a Buddhist.........

The trick to a good meditation is breathing techniques. The point is generally to balance yourself.
One breathing exercise:
Take a deep breath through your nose and keep your mouth closed; hold breath for a count of 10. Exhale slowly, hold breath for a count of 10 (or whatever number is best for you) inhale and continue.
Listen to your breath it will guide you into a peaceful meditation.
Keep your back straight while doing it. Many find different positions that they are comfortable with. Find the one the suits you best. I sit on a chair as I am not comfortable with my legs crossed but I keep my feet apart from each other and my hands are on my lap.
Some find sitting difficult. You can also do a walking mediation. I love doing this when walking in the woods.
Become aware of your feet as you walking. Become aware of how your feet touch the ground. Become aware of life that is around you and allow you thoughts to go where ever they need to go...........very relaxing and good for exercise to boot! :-)
Hope this helps.

Meditation is a catch word that has many different meanings. Their are, accordingly, many practices aimed at different expereincesand different populations, with different levels of success. your question is far to broad to answer on this forum. Try looking at Shear's book "The Experience of Meditation".

National Geographic did a large article about humans being made to benefit by praying. And there are many types of prayer. One type is to think on Jesus--or a bible scripture--or the Holy spirit or Any aspact of our religion. . As you calmly do this Gods "grace" enters and does what ever He wants to do. Health and emotionally we surly do benefit.

(Joshua 1:8) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
