Hi there,

At 5'2" and 122 pounds, your friend falls within normal range according to the height/weight fitness chart as listed in the resource box below.

Your friend must realize that she is not fat and she needs to begin to accept her body as it is. It is fine to exercise and work out, but tell her not to become obsessed with it.

Too many girls compare themselves to really skinny models (who aren't healthy) and think they're fat. Don't let your friend do that.

The average weight for someone of her height with a medium frame is between 118 - 132 pounds.

Let her know she's officially "not fat" and to start enjoying herself!

Blessings,
Mike

Weight and height and the classic insurance tables are not a good measure of "fat" and health. If she's a fitness freak that's probably an indication that she's at least moderately healthy, but the only good way to determine if she's "fat" is to get a body fat analysis done.

There are lab methods (like dunking in a water tank) that cost $50 bucks or so that are very accurate. But you can also buy an electronic body fat scale for $50 - $100 dollars that isn't as accurate as the tank ... but still pretty accurate. Avoid the caliper methods, the insurance tables (height weight) and the BMI (Body Mass Index - Really just an adaptation of the height weight insurance tables) ... those are 60 -80% accurate at BEST. The scale is about 95 - 98% accurate and the tank is about 98 - 99% accurate.

Depending on a variety of factors a woman would typically have between 15 - 25% body fat if healthy and athletic but not anorexic.

To answer your question ... she may be slightly overweight at 122 and 5'2" if she has a slender build ... but that is far from way overweight. Get a bodyfat scale to be sure .. and keep up the workouts!

If she is a fitness freak, as you said, she is probably quite muscular and muscles weigh more than fat. If a young woman was not muscular, she might be considered slightly chubby at 5ft 2in. and 122 lbs but not if she's firm and toned.

That depends on her age. 122 lbs is not that fat for 5'2", but yeah that isn't washboard stomache either. She could loose 10+ pounds. Running, crunches, cardio, pilates, etc. should do the trick.
