If you are not eating properly your immune system may be low and that would make you more susceptible to colds or the flu

It's possible. If you are experiencing stress over this stress can cause your resistance to be lower and more susceptible to germs. (medical fact) But them just being away didnt or wont cause the flu or anything else.
