If you live in a small apartment, you must take this into consideration: many dogs will not do well unless you spend a good deal of effort in meeting their needs. Don't be fooled by size into thinking a dog will be OK in a small apartment -- A terrier for example requires a lot of exercise. Conversely, many Mastiffs are content tojust lie on the floor and do nothing at all while you are
gone.

Pretty much any small breed are good for a small apartments (a breed that's under 11lb and doesn't bark much would probably be best). Small dogs are also good because most of them don't need a alot of room to run around and they can get enough exercise just from playing around the apartment. Just do some research on small dogs and see what one you think would best fit your life style. Each breed is different so you really have to do some research to see what would be best for you.

La I suggest that you get a cat and be a good neighbor. It is really annoying when that dog upstairs barks all the time.I live in the country and my Yorkie thinks he's a guard dog. He runs to his window and barks at squirrels, rabbits and stray dogs and cats plus we can't forget about the trashman, mailman, school bus or the neighbors getting home, etc. He's very obedient and if I say "Shh" he quits barking immediately but what does he do if I'm not home? How sad for you if you get that little pug you've always wanted, and you grow to love him more each day because of the joy he's brought into your life, and the landlord knocks on your door a couple of weeks later and says there have been complaints because he barks all the time you are gone from the apartment. What do you do?Get rid of the pup,but you love him;move, that may not be an option.I know this sounds like gloom and doom but it is something to consider.

First you should check your lease to see if your lease says you can have dogs or talk to your landlord. You might also want to keep in mind future possibilities of moving to another apartment that is not pet friendly. Many people get dogs while living in an apartment and when they move to an apartment that is not pet friendly then the dog goes into a shelter which isn't right. So you might want to keep that in mind and how far you are willing to go to keep your dog in case you move into another apartment.
Also you want to make sure there are places to walk your dog around and to exercise your dog. You also want to make sure you are willing to put the time, energy, and money into having a dog. Also keep in mind that dogs tend to get into things and occasionally tear up things.
I rent an aparmtne however I have to make sure my babies go with me to my new apartment even to the state I go. You wouldn't believe how many times I got no dogs allowed (a normal person with no pets can find an apartment within their price range in a reasonable time for me it took about 5 months to find an apartment that allowed a dog, was decent and not following apart, and was in my price rnage), when searching for a new aparment or how much more rent was going to go up just because I was bring a dog over (luckily I Have an amazing apartment that is dog friendly and right in my price range). My landlord also welcomed my 2nd dog without being rude or raising my rent.
Other than that to answer your question many dogs from the toy group can live in an aparment. You should check to see which breed from the toy group can fit your lifestyle.

Good Luck.

As pointed out earlier any small dog will do well in a small apartment. Short hair will be better.

Small dog like Pomeranian or poodle. If you have kids make sure you own a friendly dog. You can also ask a breed expert at http://www.dogsvets.net

Depends on what the landlord says about that. But I have a mini dachshund and she has plenty of room to play in my small apartment.

French Bulldogs are great apartment dogs. They are mellow, and they can meet their exercise needs playing. Also they are very social and love children, and they are not yappy, they only bark when there is a reason.
