War... (huh)... what is it good for?

Absolutely nothing.

Sing it again now.

I think that's a difficult question.

For most Europeans Hitler for instance did not have the "best" intentions for greater Europe if not the world, so fighting him and his armies could be considered "good" or at least "better" than the war between the Prussians and French 80 years earlier.

Fighting against someone like Napoleon - who was largely a capricious leader and clearly egotistical in nature could largely be considered a "good".

I believe that fighting in reaction to a despot or dictatorial system can be considered "more" legitimate than wars of conquest or for egotistical / religious purposes - generally one could consider these types of wars "better" than others.

For example, if it were actually the case that Islamofascists were organized and in armies and on the march across the globe and perhaps in posession of some nuclear weapons, then one could make a decent argument which would probably carry merit, however since the preceeding is now known to be a largely delusional ploy and the US is simply at war for conquest / resources / egotistical reasons, this is not the best example of a "good" war.

Unfortunately, my suspiscion is that because the US has pissed off so many people, especially in the middle east, it may in fact become a self-fulfilling prophecy that eventually there ARE islamofascist armies with nukes and an urge to use them.

I suspect however, that war is not so much an invention but a characteristic from out days as "fighting" monkeys that we will either outgrow or destroy ourselves with.

Really war is not good for nothing but losing people's lives. Why would people consider war when war is all about power, money, control. If people just take the time and open their minds God is power, money is a rude to all evil, and the only one that is in control is God. Man has disobeyed God's laws any way. That's the main reason that this world is so bad.

I'll answer this very good question from a Buddhist perspective if I may be permitted.

For Buddhists killing is forbidden, outright. To kill any sentient being is considered a heinous crime.

What then of War...?

I have pondered this very question....my answer is that there are always alternatives to War......A question which arose for me on this subject was and still is....If War happens then who would be the greatest warrior in the Battle. The one who killed the most number of the enemy or the one who killed the least number of enemy

I thought of the following response to my own question and I'll present it here for consideration.

I firstly considered the alternatives to killing.

Don't kill when wounding is enough.
Don't wound when hurting is enough
Don't hurt when to frighten into flight is enough
The greatest Warrior then would be the one who won the battle without a fight taking place, the greatest Warrior in the Battle would therefore be the one who did not have to kill.

I thought then about my conclusions and considered the War itself in the same light. Who would be the greatest Warlord in a War.

Don't commit to War when a commitment to threats are enough.
Don't commit to threats when a commitment to Sanctions are enough.
Don't commit to Sanctions when a commitment to talks is enough.
Don't commit to talks when a commitment to Peace is enough.

The greatest Warlord then would be the one who won a War without reverting to War.

From a Buddhist perspective then there is always alternatives for War. And the greatest victories are those that never involve killing.

Peace from a Buddhist.....in the season of joy...

Yes. Think of World War II. The war was fought against a power of pure evil that would have killed those that disagree with it. Destroying that evil power was a good thing.

It was costly, for sure. But it was a good and just thing.

No, war can never be a good thing but war, sometimes, is necessary. Such as World War II.....not this one.

Unavoidable--probably.
Necessary--unfortunately.

Well, human beings evolved out of conflict. I think that there is a point where it isn’t necessary any more. I would like to get to that point.
