They are great house dogs!!! I have an 8 year old female and she is the most loyal and smartest dog I have ever had. I wouldn't recommend them around young kids....my Jack loves attention but the younger kids tend to pull on her ears and she will nip at them! But besides that, they are very very smart, easy to train, very protective(very little dogs but think they are huge!!), and if someone were to hit someone...she attacks the hitter!! Yes they are very hyper but they just need to let it out in the backyard with a game of fetch or something. One problem....they are hunters! They hunt mice, rats, anything small.....so when she sees something she won't stop until she gets it...which usually means by the time she is done she is so dirty from digging in the mud or dirt or whatever she may get into!! She loves to make a mess on herself which means lots of baths! I don't know if I just got lucky and got the dirtiest Jack Russell out there but I don't mind the bath once a week!! She hates cats...yet her best friend is a cat! Lol! She loves water....the hose is her favorite toy...they are great water dogs! Oh and the short hair coats shed a lot!! But all in all.....they are great!! I wouldn't trade her for anything!!!

I posted this answer yesterday. People do not research their breeds very well and therefore they are surprised when their dog is over-active and very very hyper. Check out the websites below.
JRT's are a handful to say the least. I have a Parson Russell Terrier, different variety, wirehaired and stouter noses.
He is a 6 year old USDAA National Agility Champ and runs runs runs all around. He is a never-ending bucket of energy. I swear he drinks coffee when I am not around...TOTALLY KIDDING FOLKS!!
You need to start training him yesterday. Get my point? He needs to know you are the boss. They have short attention spans, so bits of training all day long instead of long sessions are best for these pups. Also, it may seem mediocre, but give him a short name for his call. My PRT is named Skipther in the ring, but I call him Skip. Short commands such as "Skip Sit!" are great. Also, crate training for these dogs is a must. I do not mean confine him all day long. It will drive him nuts.
Crate train him so he knows where is the bathroom and where is NOT. But if you must leave him during the day until he is perfectly housetrained, get him a puppy play pen with nothing around for him to chew. Leave him a puppy kong with peanut butter inside to gnaw on to pass the time.
People seriously underestimate these dogs. They are NOT necessarily the best family dogs. But they can be great single-person companions, especially if you want to get involved in a dog sport, such as agility or JRT go-to-ground events.

Jack Russell Terriers usually are house dogs, but they are a very high energy dog. They need a lot of exercise, attention, and training. Are you sure this is what you want?

Not really...Jack Russals are bred for hunting so they like to be outside and run. If you really love the breed then I would reccomend getting 2 so that they can wear each other out and plan on alot of outside play! If you really want an inside dog, look into "companion" breeds like pugs, or boston terriers and the like, instead of working/hunting breeds, they're bred to be house pets and are less likely to drive you nuts! They LOVE people!

I work at a boarding kennel, and over the holidays there were 6 of them there. Exery single one seemed to have a mean streak. Not nessicary mean, like biting and stuff but they just had this "tone" t them. I think they would make a good house dog, with no young children, and proper training.

They are a good little dog. They are a very high energy dog and if they dont get enough exercise they become board and have allot of stored energy and become destructive. They are VERY smart. If you are looking for a calmer dog a Chinese Crested has less energy and are 9 to 12 lbs.

We got Penny a mixed JRT and PRT when she was 10 weeks old. 4 mos later I had to find her a new home because she was so destructive and mean. I mean absolutely vicious.
Now several years later we have Peppers, a Rat terrier who is the most wonderful dog. She looks just like JRT but without the destruction and meanness. Both her parents are lovebugs just like her. She is very energetic but not hyper.
