I would say that the 200,000 + Ethiopian Military`s are the most powerful one in Africa, both the Ground & Air Forse`s are much more experienced ,and active one,
followed by South Africa and Nigerian`s ,Egypt ,
you can`t measure a military power only by the numbers of armys, the military always should be active , Gambia,Equatorial Guinea have the smallest Armies in Africa ,Mauritus a country have no Army at all in Africa ,

I'd say that Egypt is the most powerful and Swaziland is the weakest. They may not even have a military. Life expectacy in Swaziland is something like 32. Ethiopia has one of the largest militaries in Africa with 100,000 troops. Egypt has 450,000 plus fairly high tech weaponry, including an air force.

syaw is right. south african helicopters, for example, might be better than the apache (they are designed for the desert which is where our helicopters are deployed, so dust would be the issue). nigeria has a powerful army, powerful enough that they form the backbone of most african peace-keeping forces. egypt does have modern equipment. if you look at flights into africa, most flights go to:

johannesburg, south africa
lagos, nigeria
cairo, egypt
casablanca, morocco

i forget the fifth major african airport hub, but it services the mid-east part of the continent. anyway, point being, if there are a lot of flights into and out of your country, you can afford military spending.

I'm not sure if this would help but maybe you should try the CIA Worldfact book in Google.
