Besides shutter speed, from my understanding signal-to-noise levels are also dependent upon the ISO level you select with your camera and is something that exponentially increases as you increase the ISO. With 1 second exposure times you shouldnt have to worry about too much noise, but don't take my advice, read from an expert who does a lot of independant testing and low light/night photography with various digital canon slr's.
The EOS 400d should provide minimal signal to noise at all ISO settings, but if your friend is worried about noise, the best solution may be to go with film, as you won't run into noise so much as have to worry about reciprocity failure from long exposures.

HI,
I depends upon the subject. i assume ur friend wants to do still life in low light. may be night landscape too.
Most equipment give similar signal to noise ratio. but i wud suggest a slow film as a cheaper and rather better alternative. But if ur friend is new to DSLR, ask him to use a higher resolution compact camera like Canon G6, or Sony V3 etc even fuji has a 7900 or 9000 something like that. I use a nikon D70 and noise is not an aissue with it at lower iso of 200 or 300.
care,
Gill

Are you seriously telling us you have been trying to do such a simple procedure for 2 months without taking 5 minutes to look in the owners manual which tells and shows you precisely and easily how to do it? Amazing. I'm speechless. steve
