Make certain that your cough syrup contains Dextromethorphan.
Try steam or hot tea with lemon and honey.
If you have trouble sleeping, elevate the head of the bed 3-4 inches or sleep on several pillows. If you still have trouble, try sleeping in a recliner.
Consider a nasal spray containing oxymetazoline, but there will be a rebound of nasal congestion within 12-24 hours.

Lobelia extract. Lots of it in a pure form and preferably in a non-alchahol suspension. Also, get some echanecea/goldenseal, a potent garlic supplement and some herb tea that is for colds/flus and do a colon cleanse with senna/cascara sagrada/black walnut/pumpkin seeds/slippery elm bark etc. as well. There's too much mucous built up in the system.
Hot steam baths help remove toxins and tei-fu oil rubbed on the chest or another compress kept warm with a moist cloth and heat pad on the lungs will aid in breaking up phegm. Pure peppermint extract also helps a drop or two on the tongue and maybe in the hot bath as well.
Don't forget a good all-round Vitamin C with rose hips and a multi-vitamin and include potassium. This stuff got me off the bed with pneumonia and sciatic nerve pain when I stayed awake at night with an unproductive cough. Warning: many generic supplements aren't worth much. Get a good brand from a health store.

I would just keep trying different things to see what works best to ease it some. I wouldn't recommend trying to find something that will stop in entirely because your body has a reason to make you cough. If it's gotten bad however, especially if it showed up sometime well into or at the end of a cold, I'd make sure it's not turning into bronchitis...that isn't fun.

We knew a nurse who felt that drinking at instances of coughs work because of the mineral content. If it is as consistent cough even a little one for a long time , get a check up. I walked around with just slight cough, and a lot of weakness for about 5 months and finally the doctor decided to take x-rays,and I had double walking pneumonia, he was aghast. Please be careful.

Cough syrup only offers temporary relief of a hacking cough. I'd say if you've had this cough for a long time and it does not show signs of improvement, you'd best see your doctor.

My mom used to give us 1/3 lemon juice, 1/3 honey,1/3 whiskey.
She said the lemon juice would loosen the cough, the honey would soothe your throat and the whiskey would make you not care any more!

well you might need to cough. try to see if what you are feeling is pain when u cough or if you just need to stop coughing because you can't breath. If it is pain use a pain killer like tylenol. If you can't breath ask your doctor to give you an inhailer that will expand your breathing.
