I know both of these languages are very hard to learn, but which would be easiest for someone who has a latin mother tongue? I would appreciate it if people explained why they chose german/slovenian and any other advice for someone who would like to learn both but needs to set some priorities. Thanks!

Actually, there are a lot of Slovenians who speak German very well, particularly in northern Slovenia, and in the Austrian provinces bordering Slovenia (such as Carinthia and to a lesser degree Styria), there are Austrians (many with Slovenian ethnic background and some who don't have that background) who speak Slovenian.

Neither German nor Slovenian are closely related to the Romance languages (those that have developed out of Latin); German being a Germanic language and Slovenian a Slavic language.

So, if you are a proficient speaker of English (which I assume from the good English of your question), and English also being a Germanic language, German might be easier to learn for you than Slovenian. Another advantage of German is that it is spoken by aproximately 100 million native speakers and 28 million second language speakers, while only about 2 million people speak Slovene.

An argument for Slovene might be that, since the Slavic languages are much more closely related and similar to one another than the Romance or Germanic languages. learning Slovene would open a door to learning other Slavic languages such as Russian, Czech or Croatian.

At the end of the day, it reaaly comes down to what is a good reason for you personally to learn one or the other language. Don't forget it's fun to learn a lkanguage and every new language you learn opens a new window to the world for you.

German is spoken by many more people and is easier to find someone to learn from and speak with. Neither language will be easy for someone with a latin tongue as the languages are both from different families (Germanic and Slavic respectively). Personally, I found German much easier to learn than Slavic tongues as there were more similarities to English.

It really depends on your priorities and goals. If you are going to spend a lot of time in Slovenia, Slovenian makes more sense. If you're looking for a language which can be used more frequently, I'd choose German first.

German shares grammar with English! Slovenian is the more difficult to learn!

German shares many words with English and all German words are spelled exactly the way they are pronounced.

You learn all languages the same way!

First all the characters and their pronunciation, and how to count. Then beginning grammar and sentences, just the way we teach young children English!

German and Slovenian are probably about equally related to Romance languages, so you wouldn't necessarily find one more difficult than another.

These days you can learn how to speak German over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best German online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/german The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn German in just 3 months.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a German language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.
