I have been thinking about getting a small dog and pugs have the rep for having great personalities. Where i live, they run around $400...I do not plan on breeding.

Any advice would be appreciated!

We paid $800 for our pomeranian from a private breeder.

The going petshop rate is $1200 here.

I would definitely buy from a breeder who has both parents, even if it means paying more. We saw how gentle and small both parents were, and Xena has grown up to be exactly 6.5 lbs, smart, and VERY gentle/loving.

At the petstores, for more money, we saw 5 month old pomeranian puppies that were almost twice as big as our dog has grown! We also found that the petstores here around NYC buy from breeders in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas... and when we went to the websites of those breeders they would have sold us pups for about half the price including shipping :-)

I think that if you've researched the breed and spend $400 or more on a dog from a reputable breeder, then it is totally worth it. Spend $400 at a petstore and you are getting a dog worth $200 or less (so not the best quality, most likely).

Pugs have great personalities, but they can have serious medical problems. Make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. $400 is a reasonable price for a pug. You might also consider a Bichon, or Rat Terrier (that's what we have and she is the best dog.) Research each breeds personality traits to find which best fits your lifestyle. Questions to answer are do you have a lot of time to spend with the animal? Will it need a lot of exercise? Etc... Also you might consider an adult rescue Pug. 1 you can see right away what kind of personality it has and 2 they are often much cheaper. Check out www.petfinder.com for pugs at your local shelters or go on the sites classified section and search your state for local adoptable pets.

Pugs from pet stores are NEVER worth the price - since pet stores sell the lowest quality pups for the highest prices (after all they are in it for profit)

Pugs from reputable breeders are worth a lot more since they have shown the parents to PROVE they are worthy of breeding and have invested alot of vet checks before hand also...however they will be very costly for pets...

$400 seems high.. I would think $250 - $300... but ONLY if they have had first shots and come with a health guarantee...

too many people are in it for $$.. NEVER pay a cent for a pup with no vet check/vaccinations...NEVER

if you dont want to breed you can certainly find lower priced pugs at the shelters or pug rescue groups...

Please go to http://www.pugrescue.com/ there are so many of these wonderful little dogs that need a good and loving home. Most of the time if you go through one of your local rescues, the purchase price of the dog will not be that much.

Depending on the breeder, prices for puppies can run anywhere from $300.00 for a limited registration to $1,200.00 for a puppy with a championship blood line. I would not get a puppy from a pet store as most of the time they deal with puppy mills, and there might be some breeding defects and health issues.

All of the breeds of dogs that have the 'smushed' noses will snort and snore. Such as Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and such. Also go to www.akc.org to read up on the Pug.

No go to a pug rescue people get tired of the breed or don't know whats involved then you can get a dog that needs a home & will only have a small fee to pay.

I would say no. Most if not all pure bred dogs have genitic diorders and health problems. I would get a dog that is mixed with at least on other breed they are cheaper and healthier and you can be unique. People breed mixed breeds speficaly, go online and research it some. Most breeders have pictures of what the dogs look like as adults and puppys too. Or you could go to the animal shelter and adopt a dog. Then its way way cheaper and you get to skip house breaking and the puppy eating your shoes and what not.

check with pug rescues. They have them across the country. They are considerably less than a breeder. Also check your local shelter. I got my shih-tzu from an animal shelter. She's breed standard in everyway, just without papers. Shelters and rescues are financially easier and you KNOW your getting a dog that needs you.

Well they never stop making that snorting and snuffling noise so if your fine with that for the next 15 years or so then go right ahead.

400 is a good price if your getting one from a breeder though.

I've seen them run from $400 - $900.... depends on the breeder and breeding pair. If you are just looking for a pet and aren't going to show or breed, $400 isn't bad at all. Just please make sure you check out the breeder thoroughly. I hope it's at least registered or from registered parents.
