Get a clicker at your local pet store, and make sure he knows what it's for. Everytime he gets up there, swat him with a newspaper, and when he gets down, click it, and give him a treat.
When he eats his own food, click it and give him a treat.

Does he like his own food? Oft times, if a pet doesn't like their food, they will seek other foods. Change the brand, or even just the flavor. Try changing the food before you get the clicker. It may be something just as simple as yucky food. I mean, if you don't like your food, are you going to eat it, or would you go after the more yummy smelling food, that's out in the open?? Try mixing his dry food with somethig wet. Canned dog food, or some gravy. Don't make the wet food more interesting then the treats though. Otherwise the clicker training might not work!

Animals have a mind just like people do. It can be more simple, but we still think the same way. So you have to think as the animal would.

Another thing you could try, is putting the food up right away, putting it in the oven where he can't get to it, or just covering it up, and making sure the lids won't come off if he pushes it off the counter.

Does your dog know he isn't the "pack leader"?? If not, you might need to think about dominating him, instead of letting him have the run of the house! Alot of dominant pets will do whatever they want, because the owner(s) don't correct the situation, at all, or in time.

The link below is an animal behavior site. It's a great site that gives great adive, and nice insight, to the animal mind! Hope it's as much help to you as it was me!

The main thing to remember is to only correct the dog when you catch it in the act. Keep a slip chain with a toggle end on it, so you have got something to grab. Walk over to the dog, grab a hold of the toggle end and give him a pretty good correction (jerk and release - don't hang him). Tell him "Off" or "Leave it".

You can also work with things on the floor. Put your slip chain or pinch collar on the dog and attach a 4-6 foot lead. Put something on the floor that your dog likes, i.e. a piece of hot dog or cheese. Walk him towards it and when he starts to go for it say "leave it" and give him a correction away from the item. Continue this with different things until he will actually do it off lead. You should be able to have your dog in a down-stay, put a piece of food in front of him and tell him to "leave it". This doesn't, however, happen overnight. Until then, keep the temptation away by keeping the food off of the counter.

Reward him in the kitchen only when all 4 feet are on the floor. Do not let him jump on you or on a chair to get a treat or you are only encouraging the behavior.

Good luck.

you have to correct the behavior each time the dog does it. make the dog feel like it's going to die if it does that again... encourage the dog to eat it's own food, not yours...
