I have a painting of a dark scene with a river, a fire on the bank, and a bright moon in the overcast sky. On the back of the heavily framed painting is the signature:
W. Fowler
1844

Does anyone know who this is?

A Yahoo Search did not turn up a direct hit. Searching the Artnet.com has two W Fowler artists. You should check that site, and check some of these others also.

After that, you could contact galleries and auctions to find out more, depending on what you get from these sites.
