Attacking a toddler is very very serious. Have you called the owner/police/animal control? I would seriously recommend it because it creates a paper trail for law enforcement and puts the owner on notice. Please don't wait. The next baby might not be as lucky. Please be strong about this. You can do it.

So many more details are needed before any informed answers can be given.

1. What was the setting before the attack? Was the child on the dog's back, pulling his ears and poking his eyes? Was your child walking through the room and the dog lunged out from under a table and grabbed the baby?

2. What do you mean by attacked? Did the dog growl and snap? Did the child get a minor bite that caused a welt or red mark? Did the child require hospital care?

3. Did you just get the dog, or has it been a resident since the child was born?

4. How old is the dog?

5. Does the dog normally get along with the child?

6. What do you mean by the dog suffering minor injuries?

7. How much training does the dog have?

8. How much experience do you have with dogs?

These are just a start to the questions I would have for you if you contacted me as a Rescue worker with this question.

You did not say if you are the owner of the Rotti.

If the dog belongs to your neighbor, I would speak to the neighbor about keeping the dog restrained in the yard. If the problem happens again, you should call and speak to your local dog warden. They will then contact the owner of the dog. They may be fined for the dog running loose in the neighborhood and also if your child is seriously injured, the owner of the dog will be responsible for the medical bills.

If you are the owner of the dog, watch the interaction between the dog and your two year old. Children of that age really don't know how to approach dogs. Even trying to show a dog affection a child can slap a dog and not realize it. The dog reads this as agression and will react.

I certainly hope this is a help to you.

I know in the state where I live killing a dog is against the law even if the dog belongs to you. So you might want to check the dog laws in your state.

There is some confusion here. Is the dog yours or someone elses? Was your child really attacked or did some play get out of hand while they weren't properly supervised? Do you mean that your husband is going to kill the dog himself or have him killed? These things matter before asking that kind of Q.
If that dog actually attacked a child no amount of training can reestablish trust in its behavior around children. Not ever.
If it is not your dog, but the owner is known, you must go through proper channels.
In all honesty, under the same circumstances, what my husband did or did not do would not be for me to allow or forbid. Fortunately, his judgement is very good and whatever he did would be legally defensable. On the other hand, what I might do, well I don't know, really what I'ld do.

firstly if the dog doesnt have a Rabies vaccination it MUST be held for a Rabies watch (10 days) if you kill the dog.. then such a test cannot be done and you wouldnt know if it has rabies or not....

if it has had a shot then you need to ask yourself a bit more about the situation, while a dog should NEVER attack a person it can be said that in most attacks on kids - it really was something the kid did wrong...so I ask you - WHY WAS A 2 YEAR OLD KID IN THE COMPANY OF A DOG IN THE FIRST PLACE?????

interestingly most attacks on kids happen by family pets (cockers or poodles more than any other breed) and usually to kids under 5 who were not being properly supervised or who were seen doing something to provoke the attack)
unfixed dogs are more likely to attack

that said.. a dog who attacks a child unprovoked is a threat and should be euthanized if warrented...

If it is your dog, consult a Certified Animal Behaviorist who can evaluate the dog. If the dog is basically sound and the incident happened because the two year old was left unattended with the dog and the dog, for examply, did it accidentally, rehome the dog.

If it is not your dog, report the bite properly, or else your husband is likely to end up in jail for animal cruelty.

Only if you want him going to jail. Take your daughter to the ER have the wounds documented. If it's your dog call animal control and they will remove the dog. Also a Rotty is NOT the kind of dog you should ever have around small children. They are quick to defend themselves against perceived danger. It may not need to be put down just placed in a home with only adults. Let animal control make that decision. If it is owned by someone else call the police to report the dog.

Once a dog bites it will bite again

considor your two year old, think about how he/she might feel towards your dog and other dogs

also if you tried to rehome it, no one would take the dog cause it has bitten...

I dont believe it is right to put a dog to sleep but if it has bitten then it is the wisest thing to do for you and your familys sake and for the dog's sake.

The dog needs to be put down. However you choose to do it is up to you. I'm glad your daughter only suffered minor injuries although the owner should be held accountable.

If you had taken the child to the ER, they would have contacted the police immediately. If this is your own dog, and you haven't done anything about this attack, you need to put your priorities in order. The next attack might not be so "minor".

If it is a neighbor's dog or a stray, REPORT IT every time you see it running loose.

Good heavens NO, not unless you want him to go to jail for animal cruelty because I guarantee the owners will report it! Report the incident to animal control and they will handle it. The animal will be quaratined during an investigation and it will then be determined to what will happen to the animal. It's not your husbands place to make that decision. I can completely understand, I'd want to kill an animal that attacked my kids too but I NEVER would unless it was a have to or the child dies type of situation. Let the law handle it hun, don't allow your husband to get into trouble.
