who sang "We are Dead and Gone" from the 80's?

it had this fast repeating hook. male singer, around 1985 or 6 or so.final line on each verse is "we are dead and gone."

Well we know what makes the flowers grow, but we don't know why
and we all have the knowledge of DNA, but we still die/ We work so thin and fragile here, upon the land...
(something) the earth beneath us but we don't understand,

that's the first verse and chorus. please help.

I recorded this off the radio and the songs around it were "Victim of Love" by Erasure and "One Simple Thing" by Alphaville, (or was it A-HA!) if it helps any.

Blood Sweat and Tears did a song with those words in it but they were from the 60's-70's
