Signs are translated into Spanish, because Mexico is our neighbor country. Canadians speak English, and many signs and documents in Wisconsin and the upper midwest are in French for people from Quebec as well. There are many European countries that have signs in several languages, since the bordering countries speak quite a few different languages. Depending on what type of job you are performing, and the need for English to be a requirement, I can see why companies are doing that. It is a liability and may be something that they have no choice but doing. And where did you get the information about the translators being paid for by tax dollars, wouldn't the companies pay for them themselves, unless it is a government agency or arbitration or something like that?

SMy very liberal self says no BUT, I understand where you are coming from. If I had a business, I certainly would want my employees to be able to communicate with my customers. However, if I owned a business I would NOT hire anyone who couldn't communicate effectively. So it is their own fault. As to your last Q, I son't know the answer. I'm sure that you'd have to learn the language if you want to work and otherwise survive in another country.

Yes it is fair. You don't want anyone working on a gas line only to discover a leak and be unable to communicate that the entire block is about to go up.Spanish should be limited to personal time not company time.

Only Canada has as big of a problem when it comes to signs being in 2 languages. They are a good example of the problems a country has when they use 2 languages. Try speaking English in Quebec, they can, but they won't.

Yes, it's fair. People don't figure the costs of translation. All this costs money. My company had to pay for me to learn Spanish and while it kept me my job, I would much rather have had the money and had the time I spent learning to spend with my family. I don't think it's fair to punish us with standards we wouldn't have to deal with if these folks would just "do as the Romans do". I never do a free translation. i get asked for it all the time. If they want it, they have to pay-just like I do.

Not only is it fair, they should be fired. I work at a comany that if you don't speak english fluently you won't work. I own a small business and hire people to work for me. I personally check backgrounds, social security numbers, and interview. If you can't speak english, sorry no job.

I think they are right. If you don't speak English you should not be able to even hold a job really because everything job involves some form of communication either with a client or a fellow worker.
