Head lice is a problem I've been all too familiar with since my kids started school. The first step is getting a good lice comb, don't buy one of those cheap plastic combs get one of the good hard comb sets that usually come with a bug comb and egg/nit comb. You don't want to use all those chemicals if you don't have to, they are pesticides and can be dangerous to the children with repeated use. Comb those things out as much as possible, what you do is get in a well lit area and put her hair up in a pony tail, then you pull out small amounts at a time combing through it with your lice comb. You also want to be sure clean everything in the house, vacum everything you can, change the sheets, and wash all pillows/put stuffed animals in bags, head lice can only live off the body around 24 hours.
If you have already used a lice comb and a treatment like RID and followed the above steps and still have a problem with lice infestation then you should contact the doctor. Some lice have become resistant to many of the over the counter treatments like RID but the doctor can prescribe a solution called Ovide, it's not cheap but it will kill whats in their hair.
I still say combing until they are all gone is the best way, best to keep chemicals out of their hair. One more tool that is really nice is called a Robi Comb. My daughters school actually picked one up and they can be bought at Walmart for around $30. This electronic comb makes a buzzing sound as you comb it through the hair but when it comes to a bug the noise stops and it kills the bug. If you run this comb through the girls hair every day then it will eventually take care of the problem. My wife and I got one to use on the girls to find bugs before they become a problem and to help in getting rid of them if they become a problem in the future. Hope that helps.

My neice has had this problem on and off as well...and I worked at a daycare that had multiple cases....U can use a shampoo called NIX or one like it...and from what I have been told if u mix TEA TREE OIL and water and spritz it on hair each day before heading out...it is a deterrent from the critters...But she needs to be sure she has someone go through her head for at least 10-14 days straight every day and make sure all of the nits are removed from the hiar shafts...The shampoos don't necessarily kill all the nits..U need to remove them by hand...Hope this helps

as everyone has stated above me get RID or a generic form of it, but if its a recurring thing then its not just head lice...you need to have her take all linen in the house and any toys and bag them up in a black garbage bag for two weeks and then treat the carpets with bug killer (like a fogger) and also buy lice combs......they usually come with the RID and dont forget you need to treat EVERYONE in the home!! Tell her good luck!

Well If it were me ( thank goodness it isn't!) I would go to the Doctor if I had had them that long, assuming Treatment I had tried had not worked. However if no treatment has been done at all go to the pharmacy and get something.
She will also need to ask what the current advice is for the others in her house, sometimes it is recommended that they do the treatment too. if worst comes to worse shave her head!

6 months! ouch! you can buy over the counter medicated shampoo and stuff to get rid of them.
you can google home remedies such as mayo, olive oil but i would rather dump some chemicals on my head and get rid of them!
or you can always just sit down and carefully comb them all out..
