Hand-to-hand combat training is now called "combatives". It was changed a few years back. It now incorporates several different styles of fighting. The closest thing I can relate it to is UFC. On my post the CG put out the order for 90% of the installation be trained & certified at LV 1 combatives. There are 5 LV's , the highest being reserved for spec ops. If you find yourself in a one on one fight with the enemy the winner is most likely to be the one who's buddy shows up with a weapon.

That really depends on your military occupation specialty. If you are military Police, yes you do get lots of useful hand to hand training. If you are a cook in the military, no. If you military Intel, no. Not to many military jobs need to know hand to hand combat for their job. The military for the most part is its own community, and you dont want to teach everyone the same level of hand to hand combat.

It is a complete waste of time and is being considered for replacement with the Krav Maga, a Israeli self defense method (even their enemies are using it). Knowing how long it takes to get a change in here your great grand son will be starting with it.

Very useful. You have a knife or your bare hands, the other guy has an automatic rifle. Who do you think goes home in a bag? The best idea is to do it from a distance.

If you are doing basic training in the army, listen to your sgt and learn as much as you can. His job is to teach you as much as possible so that you can come back alive.

"Is it useful?" Only for saving Your life, that's about all. So why don't You join up, find out, or failing that, stop and think about the number of "old" soldiers who are walking around today, It MUST work, or You would NOT be taught how to use it.
