Good question!
I have answered many people about the same topic. They say Quran says to kill all non-muslims. And this mis-leads them to say that Quran is barbaric.
Lets analyze this.
Anyone can be misleaded by just quoting a part of the entire sentence...
"They killed him" draws sympathy for the killed person.
But the entire sentence proves us wrong
" They killed him because he had murdered thousands"
Now that justifies the part...
Similarly read the entire part. And if you do, you will find that the verse refers to the battlefield. In a war, if you find the 'infidels' who had tortured you and who want to kill you, kill them.
Who were this 'infidels'.
If you read the entire context, you get to know that, these are those pagan barbaric people who had tortured muslims, looted their property, didnt even leave the old and handicapped tortured them too. And it was during this time, that ALLAH had commanded to be steadfast. These years passed with full persecution and not even a single muslim replied back with a Slap!
So, when they migrated to Madinah, it was revealed to them "fight for your rights" "If these pagans come to kill you, you can kill them too"
As plain as that... Is this inhuman??? Any war general will say this.
But Almighty GOD, ALLAH wants more than this. What is it?
The verse continues, "But if the infidels want peace and want to surrender, ESCORT them to a place of safety"
The maximum a very merciful general will do is to say "Let them GO"
But here Islam says, "ESCORT them to a place of safety"
Now do the justice, and read the entire part.
Peace Be with you,
Good Luck.

The Koran does say to kill infidels just like the God of the Bible tells Solomon and many others to kill thousands of people and take over their land and women because they were considered "infidels" or pagans.

The verses were revealed in the middle of a battle against the pagans who had broken the treaty, what do you expect the verses to say? turn the other cheek and get killed?
In WW2 the allied forced were given instructions to kill the germans, does this mean that all Americans want to kill Germans today?

Yes. Most sects of Islam teach that everyone must be converted to Islam or eliminated from the planet. There are some references to permitting other relegions, but those usually refer to non-Islamic taxes and a pledge to not spread their corrupt faith to new users.
Mohommad we a big proponent of killing everyone who wasn't Muslum, with a special focus on Jews.

Qur’an:9:88 “The Messenger and those who believe with him, strive hard and fight with their wealth and lives in Allah’s Cause.”
Qur’an:9:5 “Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.”
Qur’an:9:112 “The Believers fight in Allah’s Cause, they slay and are slain, kill and are killed.”
Qur’an:9:29 “Fight those who do not believe until they all surrender, paying the protective tax in submission.”
Ishaq:325 “Muslims, fight in Allah’s Cause. Stand firm and you will prosper. Help the Prophet, obey him, give him your allegiance, and your religion will be victorious.”
Qur’an:8:39 “Fight them until all opposition ends and all submit to Allah.”
Qur’an:8:39 “So fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief [non-Muslims]) and all submit to the religion of Allah alone (in the whole world).”
Qur’an:9:38 “Believers, what is the matter with you, that when you are asked to go forth and fight in Allah’s Cause you cling to the earth? Do you prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? Unless you go forth, He will afflict and punish you with a painful doom, and put others in your place.”
Qur’an:9:123 “Fight the unbelievers around you, and let them find harshness in you.”
Qur’an:8:73 “The unbelieving infidels are allies. Unless you (Muslims) aid each other (fighting as one united block to make Allah’s religion victorious), there will be confusion and mischief. Those who accepted Islam, left their homes to fight in Allah’s Cause (al-Jihad), as well as those who give them asylum, shelter, and aid—these are (all) Believers: for them is pardon and bountiful provision (in Paradise).”
Qur’an:8:5 “Your Lord ordered you out of your homes to fight for the true cause, even though some Muslims disliked it, and were averse (to fighting).”
Qur’an:24:53 “They swear their strongest oaths saying that if only you would command them. They would leave their homes (and go forth fighting in Allah’s Cause). Say: ‘Swear not; Obedience is (more) reasonable.’”
Qur’an:4:74 “Let those who fight in Allah’s Cause sell this world’s life for the hereafter. To him who fights in Allah’s Cause, whether he is slain or victorious, We shall give him a reward.”
Qur’an:4:75 “What reason have you that you should not fight in Allah’s Cause?” [Another translation says:] “What is wrong with you that you do not fight for Allah?”
Qur’an:4:76 “Those who believe fight in the Cause of Allah.”
Qur’an:4:77 “Have you not seen those to whom it was said: Withhold from fighting, perform the prayer and pay the zakat. But when orders for fighting were issued, a party of them feared men as they ought to have feared Allah. They say: ‘Our Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us, why have You made war compulsory?’”
Qur’an:4:78 “Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you are in towers strong and high! So what is wrong with these people, that they fail to understand these simple words?”
Qur’an:4:84 “Then fight (Muhammad) in Allah’s Cause. Incite the believers to fight with you.”
Qur’an:4:94 “Believers, when you go abroad to fight wars in Allah’s Cause, investigate carefully, and say not to anyone who greets you: ‘You are not a believer!’ Coveting the chance profits of this life (so that you may despoil him). With Allah are plenteous spoils and booty.”
Qur’an:4:95 “Not equal are believers who sit home and receive no hurt and those who fight in Allah’s Cause with their wealth and lives. Allah has granted a grade higher to those who fight with their possessions and bodies to those who sit home. Those who fight He has distinguished with a special reward.”
Qur’an:4:100 “He who leaves his home in Allah’s Cause finds abundant resources and many a refuge. Should he die as a refugee for Allah and His Messenger His reward becomes due and sure with Allah. When you travel through the earth there is no blame on you if you curtail your worship for fear unbelievers may attack you. In truth the disbelievers are your enemy.”

And so what if it does? That's only at time of war - Jihad - that this applies to.
Jihad, often mistranslated as ‘Holy War’ (a popular phrase from the Crusades), actually means: to strive and endeavour in Allaah’s cause. Hence, jihad can be expressed in a purely peaceful way. The Prophet Muhammad had said that:
“The best jihad is by one who strives against (the evil of) his own self for Allaah, the Might and Majestic.’ (at-Tabarani)
Allaah has said:
“So obey no the disbelievers, but make a great jihad against them (by preaching) with this (Qur’aan). (Qur’aan 25:52)
Likewise, when it becomes necessary to physically fight evil, jihad takes on a martial dimension, the so-called ‘jihad of the sword.’ The Prophet and his followers, like many Israelite Prophets before them, fought wars in self-defence and in order to abolish idolatry, tyranny and oppression. Allaah says:
“And what is wrong with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allaah and for those weak, ill-treated and oppressed among men, women and children whose only cry is: ‘Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors, and raise for us from You on who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help!” (Qur’aan 4:75)
Bearing in mind the restless, violent persecution that was inflicted upon Prophet Muhammad and his followers whilst in Makkah (Mecca), it is not difficult to see why God would order their new community in Medinah to prepare and ready themselves to face off the clear and present danger to their fledging Islamic state.
“And make ready against them all you can of (military) power, including steeds of war, to terrify the enemy of Allaah and your enemy and others besides whom you may not know, but whom Allaah does know. And whatever you shall spend in Allaah’s cause shall be repaid to you, and you shall not be treated unjustly. But if they incline towards peace, you too incline to it. And trust in Allaah,. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.” (Qur’aan 8:61-62)
This right, to possess the means to defend against and ward off any known or unknown external threat, is one which every nation in every age reserves for itself. Even so, regardless of how cruel the enemy, Islaam insists upon a measure response which avoids excessive or unrestrained acts of vengeance.
“And if you punish (your oppressors), then punish them with the like of that which you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, verily, it is better for the patient ones” (Qur’aan 16:126)
The Prophet Muhammad also forbade behaving treacherously with one’s enemies and the violation of treaties and ceasefires. Hence, the combative jihad of the sword is like a surgical operation: it does not exceed the area of infection.
“And fight in Allaah’s Cause those who fight you, but do not transgress the limits (set by Allaah). Truly, Allaah loves not the transgressors” (Qur’aan 2:190)
Even during open war, the Believers are ordered with compassion and to continue the greater jihad of calling to the Truth:
“And if any of the pagan (enemy) seeks your protection then grant it – in order that he may hear the Word of Allaah – and escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men who know not.” (Qur’aan 9:6)
