How many of you run more E.M.S. calls then fire calls and do you wish it was defferent????

We run a lot more EMS than we do fire calls, I think that every combination department. (joint Fire/ EMS) does. Between residential sprinklers and better fire prevention, we are running fewer working fires than ever.
I do wish it was different. It is not that I wish more fires on my neighbors, it is I wish that we were not spending so much time on EMS.
I have been a volunteer for many years, and have seen too many changes to count. We used to get dressed on the back step, while the engine was responding. Now everyone has to be in full turnout gear and seated and seat-belted, before we turn a wheel. Of course, response time suffers, but that is the way it is now.
People join the fire department because they want to be firefighters. EMS service is considered by many to be a cost we have to pay, not a benefit of the job. In my department, we have 2 types of riding (non administrative) members. We have EMS (ambulance only) members, who,as it implies, only ride the ambulance, and full riding members who ride both. You have to be trained as an EMT, as well as trained in firefighting, to be allowed to ride the fire trucks.
I love EMS only members. Every one means that there are fewer times I will be forced to take an ambulance call!

Everyone in every fire department in America runs more EMS calls. Code enforcement has eliminated a lot of fires. Why would you wish more fire calls on your neighbors?

More E.M.S........its more interesting than fires....fires all go out on their own
