Oh it holds the ID tag, the shot record, a radio box for those invisible fences, and keeps the little finger nipper close with a leash at bathtime. A handy handel for those rescues from the kitchen trashcan. Anchoring to the kitty carrier incase the door comes open at the worst time. Carrying a bell. Attaching toys to help kitty get sleepy. Its a handy little accessory that can give the cat a stylin' look all its own. Fleacollars suck. If the cat chews on it it gets sick. Put pennyroyal ,and marigold in the kitty bed to keep fleas at bay.

A collar on a cat serves the same purpose as a necklace on a human. Decorative!
Some also use a flea collar on the cat.
In old kids' tales, the mice tried to bell the cat.

So that if the cat gets lost you could identify it be it's collar perhaps. But that doesn't usually work unless you also have tags on the collar.

if the cat gets lost or escapes, it shows people that the cat belongs to someone and if it has your contact info on it, the person could call you and return your cat.
some cat collars are for flea protection.
some are for show. people like to put bling on their pets.
you can also walk your cat with a leash- i'm not kidding

to look decorative, to use an ID tag or emergency info if the cat has health problems, to add a bell to keep birds away, if it's a flea collar (which are toxic) to wart off fleas, to attach a small leash to for basic restraint (but a harness should be used instead since cat necks are very fragile)...

To show ownership, in case it gets lost--or found.
...so the cat can wear its' tags, ie. rabies vaccination, city tag...phone number tag.
Every kitty needs to have some "jewelery" to wear !
Just make SURE the collar is designed for CATS...with a stretch section or a brake-away part...so if they get it caught on something, they don't choke.
Microchip & spay Kitty, too !

It looks nice.
If your cat goes outside, the bell warns birds of its approach. Just make sure it's a safety collar, which will come apart if the cat gets tangled up in something.

To have ID, shot record and pet license on it if the cat goes free and is found. If the pound has it, the cat is returned and not held for 72 hours and put to sleep if not claimed.

It is something to attach a name tag with your phone # ,in case he gets outside and gets lost. Hopefully your cat stays indoors, but in case he escapes he will have an ID.
