I really think Microsoft Office programs are really helpful...
I'll just give you some basic information about each of those programs...
Word - A wonderful word processing program. One of the best in the market today. It is very useful in creating reports, writing letters, documents... etc. This is the most commonly used Word Processor.
Excel - Once again, a great program. Excel is used to create good tables & graphs and used to work with huge amounts of data. This program does the Mathematics required for working with a lot of data.
Powerpoint - Another great program. Powerpoint is used for created charts, presentations and animations. This is a full-fledged program for making your presentations look the best.
Outlook - This is an email-client. You can use Outlook to send and receive e-mails the same way you do with other email clients like Yahoo!. One of the good e-mail program clients today.

They are for different purposes. Word is a word processor, Excel is a spreadsheet, and Powerpoint is for presentation graphics.
However, there is no advantage to using Microsoft Office over its free competitors OpenOffice and NeoOffice/J, unless you need full VBA support (which the other programs don't yet have, but will soon). Outside of VBA, the free programs do everything MS Office does.

I've been working with MS Office for 10 years. Can't beat it, can't think of any disadvantages -- unless you consider having to pay for it a disadvantage.
It is the most widely used software, therefore, if you learn the programs well, you should be able to get a job in many businesses, though not necessarily CEO to start.
