sounds like you have an infection in the tooth. the dentist will have to root fill the tooth and make sure the infection is cleared before continuing the treatment. he/she might also give you some antibiotics.

he is talking about a post for the crown ( not a cap..you wear a cap on your head !! ) but the root needs to be root filled first and the infection has to be got rid of as well..

probably a dental abscess, hope he put you on anti-biotics. once it has settled he can continue with the dental work.
