I am going to have to reformat my hard drive, because my computer will not start. All I can access is the recovery console, which seems like some sort of command prompt. I have an external hard drive. How can I copy the files over to it before I reformat?

First, Connect the External hard drive...

Once, connected, right click on the file(s) and select Send To > (Your Hard Drive)...

This is one way...

The other way is copy the file(s), go to My Computer and double-click on the external hard drive...

Then, paste the file(s) there...

This is another way...

Hope this helps...
Good Luck...

When you put the Windows installation cd in the drive and start the process, you have to go past the press R for Recovery Console and go on, where you will see a prompt for press R to repair Windows. This is after you have to press F8 to accept the licensing agreement. Make sure your current XP installation is selected and then do the press R to repair....

If you insist on moving files to an external hdd and reformatting, then you connect the external to the computer, usually via a USB port, and then you navigate via My Computer to the new drive that you see listed and double click it, and a window comes up and shows the contents, if any, of the external and you copy and paste whatever you want onto it.

If your external drive is USB connected, just copy/paste.

I suggest copy, instead of cut, just to be safe in that you still have something if the transfer goes sour.
