From a excellent modern translation:
"Keep YOUR senses, be watchful. YOUR adversary, the Devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking to devour [someone]. But take YOUR stand against him, solid in the faith, knowing that the same things in the way of sufferings are being accomplished in the entire association of YOUR brothers in the world" -1 Peter 5:8-9
find room to deceive him?......that I don't understand from this Scripture.

In Scripture, it is a quote from 1Peter 5:8, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist, stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethern that are in the world". That is the entire verse, does not say to find room to deceive him. The book of Job has some great advice for folks who want to try to fight the devil: Don't do it - at least never on your own, he'll wipe the floor with you. Remember we have no power- our power only comes by way of God, so put on the whole armour of God to resist the firey darts of the devil; and unless it is the expressed will of God, don't tangle with him. In the name of God the Father, and in the precious name of Christ, order satan out of your home. Luke 10 gives you that power, again though, through God. If the book you are reading has that Bible verse, and then if I don't misunderstand, but that it continues with the "then find room to deceive him" - that worries me, because it is not written in scripture, but added by man. Do you really want to use your time reading the thoughts of man instead of the thoughts of God?
Be very careful.

My bible says in 1 Peter 5:8-9 says be of sober spirit be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. and then goes on in vs 10 and 11 to say And after you have suffered for a little while the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The Devil, as you call it, cannot be deceived. It is a force, a commissioned force, commissioned by Divine Law to ensure that individuals will expand and grow, through negotiating circumstances in a world that is replete with opportunities of working with opposities in a universe comprised of dualities and fitted with untold numbers and forms of dualities.
To "deceive" the Devil, as it were, is to come to master that which is Neutrality. For the Devil is 'not' the opposite of good as one would believe but rather is the imbalances that occur in either the good or the evil...

Since the Devil is a spiritual creature, existing in more dimensions than we do, He can actually READ our Hearts, like Jesus Christ could do, meaning he would KNOW what your thoughts and desires were. How do you fool a creature or human who can do this? Jesus was never "blind-sided" was he? He even sent Judas OUT TO BETRAY him from the Lord's Supper! So, if you can't fool a perfect human male, you sure won't a spirit creature.
The reason he sent Judas "out" was so that Judas would not partake of the Last Supper with Him and his "true" apostles. They partook of the meal and wine with him, not Judas.

If you read the rest of the passage, it doesn't say you should try to deceive him, but "resist him steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being experienced by your brothers who are in the world" (I Peter 5:9)
James says, "Submit yourself therefore unto God; resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7)
Only be sure to resist him in the NAME of JESUS. That is the only name the devil respects. "Lord, even the demons are subject to us IN YOUR NAME" (Luke 10:17)

Beware of biblical passages, NT or OT, where the teachings violate or teach the oppostie of what Jesus taught.
Several of the responses above indicate that the letter-writer is teaching that the Devil should be resisted...whereas Jesus teaches that those who follow Him should not resist evil (and I presume the Devil is evil).
