I have a 1.5 yr old scotish terrior and I love her to death! While my man was in Iraq she really was my baby and I treated her like it, held her like one...If i sit down she instantly jumps in my lap. She was all I had so she got plenty of attention...well now I'm having a baby of my own due in a few weeks and I'm freaking out about how to reverse the damage I have done. I don't want her taking it out on the baby, or acting out becasue she feels neglected.

Dont panic just yet.The dog may be just as excited about the new baby as you.
Try rubbing the baby's blanket on you, the baby then the dog and allow the dog to sniff it.Do this b4 you bring the baby home if you can and then do it a couple times a day after the baby gets home. The dog will associate the baby with you and itself.
But, you are going to have to teach the dog that you are incharge and also not to jump in your lap when you are holding the baby.Maybe you can let the dog sit next to you while your holding the baby.
Give the dog attention when you are not holding the baby. And some but not allot of attention while holding the baby.
It will soon fade if the dog does get jealous though. In a few weeks....the dog will forget that there even was a time w/o the baby.

I have had this problem before and what I done is just showed the dog once the baby got here that I still loved it and I wasn't going to leave it out. Just while holding the baby or feeding the baby call the dog up beside you and play with it and rub it to let it know you still love it and you haven't forgot about it.And that's about the only thing you can do.

It's amazing how animals seem to be able to sense things like babies and hurt animals... dogs are especially intuitive.

Dogs are also amazingly resilient and adaptable (which is what makes them awesome pets).

What I have heard, from friends in similiar situations, was to start paying less attention to the dog gradually during these last few weeks you have left. Give her tons of interesting toys to occupy herself with, and encourage her to run around the yard and be more independent.

When your baby comes home, give the dog a corner of the baby blanket to smell and lick. Say "baby" or your baby's name alot so she gets to know the name and that the baby belongs :) Praise her alot or give a treat when she sits in her spot and chews on a bone (or other "good" and calm behavior).

I recommend contacting your local vet and posing your question to him/her. I'm sure that your dog will do the right thing when your baby comes home. Just make sure that you don't leave the baby alone without supervision if the dog is in the same room.

Good Luck!
Happy New Year and Thank your man for the outstanding Service to our country. Everything will be all right.
