I have a pomeranian, and she is great when left alone with the TV on. She's constantly happy, and sometimes I wonder if she is a golden retreiver trapped in a 6.5 lb body. We just put baby fences in front of the doors we don't want her to go thru :-)

Dogs have coevolved with people for thousands of years and are pretty resilient.

Papillions and toy poodles were bred for a VERY long time to be companion dogs. It was only since Queen Victoria that pomeranians were really separated and bred into being "pet" dogs from their larger spitz cousins and then became primarily indoor/companion dogs (she bred the breed down from 30 lbs to 15, according to a book I read).

I hope this helps.
Give your dog alot of toys and things to chew up while you're gone. Ours likes bones hidden inside paper towel tubes (an extention of having parrots- we make EVERYTHING a mental challenge). She also likes the baby shape sorters (put buiscuits inside along with the blocks), and treats hidden so she has to go looking for them.

I can't speak on Poms and Poodles, but I do know Paps...Paps are notorious for having seperation anxiety. They are also hard to housebreak or paper train, so unless you have all the time in the world (which obviously you don't by your own admission), I would not suggest a Pap for you. Good for you to be responsible enough to ask before getting a dog. Most people get what they want and then deal with the consequences later when the breed is not right for them...

I wouldn't suggest getting one, especially a puppy. Dogs are very social and love to be around people. If you were to get a puppy, imagine how many things (s)he would chew up. Imagine how much poop and urine stains would be left. Puppies need a very committed owner to house break them, to train them, to be with them etc.
If you really wanted one, maybe two adult (from a shelter or rescue group) dogs would be good so they had company throughout the day. You would have to get one that is already house broken and trained (obedience).
People will probably suggest a crate but leaving a puppy/older dog in a crate for 8 hours is very cruel. Imagine being locked up in a small cage for 8 hours, having to poop and urinate in it.

I would also suggest maybe 2 cats. I've got 3 kittens and they get along really well. It's better than 1 cat because atleast they can keep each other happy and entertained.

I have 2 poms and they do fine by themselves. You will probably get lots of responses saying that it wouldn't be advisable to get a dog and leave for that long, but come on!Everyone has to work and there are millions of dogs out there that are left alone for a period of time every day and do fine.Just as long as you don't leave the dog tied out or without food and water,it should be fine.Dogs hate to see you leave but they love when you return.

Don't get a Pom, because they require lots of smooches and do not like being alone for any long periods of time!
