You, would call the jail you think they are at ask for the front desk or records department, tell them the person you are wanting to know if they are in prison, and tell them the reason you want to know, they will have to have a valid reason why you are inquiring on them too.

depending on your location you can try the county detention centers website. I know here in Vegas all of that info is available on the web and you can search by a persons name to see if they are in custody.
