I am considering moving to Baltimore from Gaithersburg. Since I work in DC, I worry about the commute being even longer than what I have now.

I think you'll find the drive to be just as bad as from Gaithersburg if not worse, depending on where in the Baltimore area you decide to live. Many commuters from Baltimore to DC use the MARC train--the ride is about an hour from either Camden or Penn stations in Baltimore to Union Station in Washington, but you have none of the driving headaches and you can get stuff done on the train, or just kick back with your iPod and newspaper.

This option is especially effective if you live close to one of the MARC stations and your job isn't too far from Union Station. Good luck!

Okay. Living in Baltimore is completely dangerous. But living anywhere nowadays is a gamble too. I live in the southern part of PG county Maryland in Upper Marlboro and I am tucked away in a quiet community. It is nice and its quiet. I work @ the Dept of Energy in DC and today it took me 28 minutes from the time I started my car to the time I pulled up in front of the building.

Unless you have some specific reason to move to Baltimore, I don't see why you would want to go way out to live and have that awful commute everyday. The Metro helps. I also drive to the "Largo" metro station and the commute is 22 minutes-and you save on gas that way! Everyone knows how crazy the gas prices are.

You will, in my opinion, be putting yourself in a position to be very stressed by moving to Baltimore and driving to DC everyday for work. I hope if you ARE moving to B-more, it is in a good area, tucked away from all the violence that is plaguing the area. However, the commute you are already taking is a crazy one, and B-more is not any closer. I

f you absolutely must move, try the few PG county areas that are still in good areas, or maybe Waldorf in St. Charles county. Maybe even Anne Arundel County which is wonderful and close by as well...

It would make sense if you were going to take the train. I would imagine that traffic could be a problem, even though the trip from Gaithersburg to DC was no picnic, I'm sure. The Capital Beltway makes 695 look like Route 66, at least during traffic times.

Baltimore is cheaper than living in DC and it certainly beats the cookie-cutter monotony of the DC suburbs. I couldn't really tell you which way to go though, because I would most definitely adjust my living preferences around the convenience of the commute.

That does not seem like a good idea. The commute from G'burg to DC is no picnic by any means but it would be worse from Baltimore. The Baltimore beltway is clogged at all hours. You would have to leave home much too early for an enjoyable day at work.

Why not consider moving into one of the renovated areas of DC? The housing is expensive but would be less of a commute.

Baltimore... Your nuts. crime is huge! traffic is terrible. (my husband is a detective in Baltimore city 17 years) Try Virginia or One of the Southern MD counties (Not PG or Montgomery)

I have made the commute from Baltimore to Vienna, Va many times. Sometimes I can do it 1.75 hrs, more often it is 3-4 hrs. The worst!

I used to work on K Street and had a couple of co-workers who did this. They all complained about the length of the commute; minimum 90 minutes each way! The ones who took the MARC train into the city and metro the rest of the way could deal with it. The ones who drove were miserable.

I also have a couple of co-workers who do it. It's tough, and really the only way you'll last is if you take MARC to and from. At least you can get work done or sleep or something during the trip, and it's a shorter commute - no dealing with traffic, etc. Although MARC has it's delays as well...

Baltimore: More expensive, more crime, lengthier commute. But hey, there's seafood.

Just say no to Baltimore. I liked Gaithersburg.
