She is 13, 5'0 and 80 pounds. She is a VERY active runner. 7th in the nation, and she does eat a lot in my opionion. But we both want to know how she can gain more weight. When I was her age, I was also underweight. Anything we can do?

Her body is doing exactly what she has conditioned it to do with the running. It has adjusted to be very efficient for her. For that reason, I wouldn't think she should gain weight just for the sake of gaining weight. As long as she is happy, healthy, and able to do what she needs to do, there shouldn't be any problem. If you do try, maybe something like the PediaSure shakes for active children. Or even the regular Ensure for adults. I would seriously talk to her doctor first though, you might be starting something you don't want started, and it isn't healthy for a teen to obsess on her figure before her health. Hope the best for both of you. Good luck.

Encourage snacks full of fiber and good things. Keep a granola bar or something similar in her bag at all times. As she is very active, she'll need to consume more healthy calories than average. To get the weight up, consult your doctor (or hers if they are not the same). They will have the best advice.

Also, if she follows everything the doctor says and she does not gain weight or begins to lose weight - there is a possibility of an eating disorder called Exercise Bulimia. I doubt this is the cause for your daughter as you were also underweight, so don't panic. But don't close your mind off to it. That is very skinny, but just as long as she eats, she is alright, make sure she eats at least 3 meals a day, and a snack.
My twin sister is 14, 5"3, and 82 pounds.
I have a friend that is only 70 pounds, 14, and 5"0.

high-protein. ..you can also get weight gain bars..shakes...drinks..if not, then go 2 a doctor and he can prescribe your daughter some stuff to get some weight gain. My mom, when she was at that age, had to do that too. Somtimes there's nothing you can do because the body is naturally that way. I have a friend who has super high metoablosim and is the same like ur daughter...she went to the doctor ...tried high protien...and even eats tonnns of junk food and still can't gain weight. so yeah...

Give that girl pasta!! All forms of pasta are a super form of energy that her body can use while she's running and she won't crash like she would from sugar (short-term energy supply). Pasta is so versatile, you can put anything on top of it. Hint: You never really find a lot of underweight italian girls!:)
