At Thanksgiving our dog( chihuahua) had her first litter of puppies and killed all four of them while we were gone to work.. I was told sometimes they do not know how to care for them. Is this true?

First litters can be difficult for dogs, especially if they are very young. Is it possible that sensed that there was something wrong with them or that it was an accident? It could also be possible that she was in pain or ill and killed the puppies for some reason related to that. Genocide is not uncommon among wild animals.

I never heard a dog kill its puppies. Do investigate in other perspective. Dogs usually fond to their puppies and do their best to feed & milk them. I understand other animals kill their new borns in a fight to survive. Maybe a snake or scorpion are in the house while you guys are not in the house. Even logically speaking all 4 puppies been killed by the mother at a time and that too a chihuahua dog, thats something very fishy.

dogs suffers from post partum depression too after giving birth to a litter just like humans

They do know.
They only kill their puppies if they feel unsafe in their environment.
They feel that they'd rather kill the puppy before someone else does.
How do you treat your dog?
It wouldn't do that unless you treat it roughly.

its because they are unhealthy. the mother knows this.
