i was watching hsn one day when they had a lcd/ hd tv and they kept mentioning that a great feature it had was a built in hd converter. does anyone know what that means?

I am not sure what the HSN hosts are smoking, but it is true that every HDTV has an internal scaler that will scale standard definition to fit all the lines of the HDTV.
(Standard TV is about 480 lines, HDTV has at least 720 lines).

This applies to ALL HDTVs
