There is a pretty good reference for all California residents at:

I can't seem to find a volunteer center nearby your area, so you could probably check with your local chapter of the United Way for volunteer referrals as well. They are pretty good at matching your interests with volunteer opportunities if a dedicated volunteer center isn't available in your area. The link to your local chapter is:

I work at a deaf and blind school. They are always needing help. The kids aren't just deaf or blind many have other medical problems. If one by you needs volunteers you might have to pass a background check, but I think that's all that would be required. We have an elderly lady who volunteers with the children because she wanted something to do and the kids love her.You could give it a try if you have one near by.There are also other special schools you could try.

I work as a volunteer mental health advocate and support person in Australia. I am also sure that there is a wealth of info on the net to assist you in doing volunteer work.
The only problem with volunteering is that it absolves governments of their responsibility to adequately fund essential community services.
