I have a D50 but I have never used action mode.

Instead try the "S" or shutter priority mode and choose 1/500th of a second or faster. The camera will then set the aperture for you. If it is out of range the camera will tell you. If the camera selects a small aperture (large number say F16) then you can go faster still to freeze the action even better.

Sorry but I have never trusted those inbuilt settings of the camera. The D2 for example only has P S A & M.
