I can read anythig in the OT and learn from it.Some guy obviously a little kid posted a question about a scripture in which a man was required to pay 40 pieces of silver for the price of forcing a girl , and he also had to marry her .He intended it as some kind of a piece of evidence in his mind that this shows the bible to be wrong or ridiculous. I never feel that way, but always get great instruction form stories such as those. Some things I get from it are:
responsibility, comittment, honor, order, restitution, sacrifice, justice, purity, cleanness, value, defense of family values, forgiveness, truth, reality, rape prevention, defense of chastity. I look in the world at the detractors and scoffers who would bring this as an accusation and see none of these, but promotion of the opposite, and is it any wonder I believe the bible?

But not the clearly easy ones but even the ones llike "Incoherent Fool" has brought up, I learn from those too. That one teaches the fear of God, who gives life and has the right to take it away, babies and all.
But I wonder if "Incoherent Fool" supports a womans right to choose, I already know he doesn't support Gods right to choose.

Numbers 31:17-18
"Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

Whether the reader gets anything from reading depends on the workings of the Holy Spirit. This is why some receive great insights and others see nothing but gibberish.

I honestly don’t believe that every story actually happened, or at least not in the way told, but I’ve had too many profound experiences while reading to doubt that the Spirit is at work.

The strangest, I actually felt that somebody was shaking my shoulder just as I started to read a particular verse. I ended up reading he verse over in several different translations before I fully understood why it was so significant in my life.

Right...the OT with such wonderful/enlightening advice and information as:

-bats are a kind of bird
-donkeys and snakes can talk
-god actually was afraid man could build a tower that would reach heaven
-owning slaves, for work or just for sex, is cool, just try to avoid beating them to death
-if your teenage son gives you some lip, kill him
-god loves the smell of burning animals more than burning plants
-the world is flat and revolves around the sun
-dashing babies heads against the rocks is cool
-incest is cool, but its better if you are drunk
-god made photosynthetic plants before he made the sun
-snakes eat dirt and used to walk on their hind legs
-god and his minions had a long history or raping human women before Mary
-crushed testicles was a common injury...and god really had the willies about that one
-rabbits chew the cud and insects have 4 legs
- god had a Howard Hughes like obsession with cleanliness
-god can't make up his mind how to communicate with us...should it be a burning bush, a moist fleece?

Nick F:
Some commandments may seem pointless, but It was all god's way of keeping his people safe: He forbade the eating of shellfish, and ham for example. they carry disease. (shellfish when undercooked, and pigs by their living habits) Forbiding incest, polygamy and homosexuality stops STD's and genetic disorders. Nowadays, hospitals practice circumcision because it prevents many diseases.

Incoherent fool:
I love how people like you take a quote out of the book they dispise to try to use it against it. Did you even read the context?
God is punishing the Midianites for worshipping Baal, instead of him. This may seem harsh, but God even describes himself as jealous. how would you feel if you were right in front of your child and they built a statue that looked nothing like you and started worshipping it as their father and sacrificing people before it?

the OT is great, because it lets us get a feel for god's strictness and wrath. if you don't follow all the rules exactly, then you are unacceptable to him. (oh, and did you remember your sin offering this year? nevermind...)

The NT is even better because we get to see how the same god who made all the rules sent his son to that we could be with him for eternity, throwing the rulebook out the window.

God bless you all and have a good new year

By the way, do you know the reference to the story you mentioned? I'd like to check out the context.

I doubt it even exists.
In the old testament, i believe that rapists were stoned outside the city wall (not joking).

you word, the element i'm wondering right here, is once you're THAT fearful about being reported, and given there's a rule in YA about posting man or woman cloth, then why did you post it? that's not precisely massive/wise/ even humorous......

I've learned lots of lessons from the OT. It's full of wisdom that applies to everyday life. Take the story of Job for example. When you think your life sucks and that God doesnt love you, read the story of Job.

If you want the Law-giver living in your heart, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Of Him it is written "I delight to do Your Will O My God, Your law is within My heart' (Psalm 40:8)
