When adjusting the volume on TVs, along with the volume bar at the bottom of the screen, the volume number changes as well. I usually listen between 8 and 12. My question is, does this number stand for something...like decibles perhaps? Or is it just an arbitrary number?

It's just an arbitrary number

the number you are referring to stands for the number of decibels the television is putting out so naturally the higher the volume the higher the number gets and vice versa the softer the volume the lower the number

The numbers aren't decibels--It's just a scale. Some TVs can go up to 100, while some go up to 50. It's just a TVs personal measure of how loud it is.

The answer to this question varies depending on the TV. Often it is some relative (non-absolute) measure of the total output decibels as compared to the input audio source (whether antenna, cable, DVD, etc...).
