The best way to select the perfect wedding dress for YOU is to go to the local shops and try them on - lots of them. Wear the appropriate undergarments and take along a friend or two for support. If you go to a really upscale salon the sales person should be very knowledgeable and will be able to offer suggestions for the right styles for you. Don't forget to consider the time of day and the formality of the wedding when choosing style and lengths.

A dress with a scooped neckline. It will open up your face and display your decolletage without showing too much cleavage. If you love the look of strapless gowns, choose one that has a slight dip along the neckline, like a sweetheart, rather than a style that goes straight across. Knowing the place and time of your wedding will help focus your search. Will you be having a daytime ceremony on the beach? You can rule out ball gowns with long trains and dramatic embellishments. Exchanging vows in a candlelit cathedral? Avoid short slip dresses or anything that looks like it could be worn to a cocktail party. Most fabrics are suitable year-round, but some, like linen and organdy, are more appropriate for warm weather, while velvet and brocade are best left for winter.

Your exactly right, while big puffy ball gowns are pretty, they make a girl look way shorter. I'm 5'4" and looked ridiculous in them! I nice a-line would be good. if you have the figure for it, a long strait dress or perhaps something kinda flowy. Look for dresses with beading or impelishments that draw the eye up. avoid dresses with a line that hits to low on the waist as this will cut you in half and cause you to look shorter. 1/3's however tend to balance you out. consider a higher neckline if that flatters your chest. It will do more to draw the eye up and create an illusion of being taller, or at least-not as short!

Silk material ( the kind that hugs the body and hangs just beautifully like an A-line) empire neckline and it should be a below the knee dress or tea lenght with high heels.
Good luck!

I got a petite-sized dress from Jcrew.com. It was still a little long, so I had it altered. But you could leave it long and let it flow in the back.

strapless A-line dresses look great on any body type- and the skirt is not too big. just know that whatever you wear...you are the bride and the focus is on you and your hubby-to-be. you want to look great and feel great, so if you find a dress, and you love it, and love the way you feel and look in it, then thats the most important thing. feel confident, and everyone will think you look amazing...regardless of your size, you'll overshadow everyone

Short sleeves and open neck...fullness of skirt is fine. Shortish veil do detract from lack of height. High heels of course. It gives an all around taller and balanced look.
