I've done this before... Put it in the oven at 350 degrees and just forget about it When you remember about in five or six hours later it will be black.

Make your icing as usual, and add 1/2 cup of cocoa powder. This makes the icing darker to turn it black. Then use black paste food coloring (found at any Michaels craft store or cake decorating supply store) and add using a toothpick until you reach the desired color, mixing well between each addition of color. The color will get darker as it sits, so it's best to prepare it 2 days to a week in advance of needing it. Be sure to store it in the fridge.

The best way to make black icing is to purchase black icing paste from a craft store/ baking supply store / or even Walmart. Wilton is a good brand but if you can find Ateco gel paste you will get a better color. If you don't want to use a load of black paste up(and yes you will use a lot of it to make a deep color) start by making a dark color icing for example a dark blue, red, gray, etc. Then added black paste to it. GOOD LUCK cleaning your hands by the way if you get it on... :)

The best way to make real black icing is to make it dark brown first. If you just use black paste colouring, it'll just turn out grey. So do this.....use cocoa and make it as dark brown as you can. Then use black paste food colouring, (you won't need as much). I've done this back in my time of cake decorating. Good luck!

A gourmet food store or cake/candy supply store will carry black food coloring. Wilton is a good brand. Mixing colors together results in a gross grey, not black.

The colored black paste works better then the liquid food coloring. But, it does take quite a bit before it turns really black. Also, it turns darker the longer the frosting sits, so don't be dis-may ed, it will get darker the longer air hits it.
