I didn't WANT to be without sexually, but I wanted to please God with my loyalty to His standards more than I wanted sex. I was celibate for nearly 8 years before I married my present husband. We had known one another for nearly 18 years, and had even lived together in the past, but he knew of my commitment to Jehovah, and my determination to remain celibate if and until I remarried. And he was ok with it. We've been married now for over a year, and both of us know that our relationship is built on more than just physical attraction. It's an enlightening thing to know, that you are loved for who you are, and not what you can do for another person sexually. And being celibate is not easy, but it's certainly not the most difficult thing I have ever done, either. After about six months, sexual desire begins to wan, and after a year or so, you get yourself together and life goes on. There's LOTS of things in life more important than sex!! :)

Actually, I read that in certain Western countries 1% of the population is asexual.
Is it an answer?
About my opinion?
When I was young and the man I was in love gave as condition, I would have to read not only Finnegan' s wake and Ulysse from Joyce but the Snark of Lewis Caroll, I strongly hesitated and yes I contemplated staying celibate...
I bet you understand why!
Then there is also the big and major problem of Unrequited Love!
And I thing this is one of the usual reason of that kind of temptation...
Then Freud...
Well, there I have no answer...
As speechless as he was in his old age...

I was celibate for about two and a half years, though not for any religious reasons--I had gotten out of a bad relationship, was in no hurry to get into another, and I'm not a fan of doing much of anything outside of a relationship.

I tried it, not always successfully, for many years because being in love is so painful. I think Freud was wrong. Being in love is madness and exquisite pain.
