SINGAPORE USED TO BE THE HOTTEST PLACE IN SE ASIA, TO THE POINT THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO VISIT MUCH LESS LIVE THERE BUT BECAUSE OF THERE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND MGMT. THAT THEY PLANTED SO MUCH TREES ALL OVER THE PLACE THE CITY LOOKS SO ,CLEAN AND POLLUTIONS IS MUCH CONTROLLED AND PARKS ARE SO GREEN. WHY CAN'T WE IN THE USA DO THE SAME THING, WE WORRY SO MUCH OF OTHERS THINGS TO THE POINT OF WASTING OUR CITY LAND AND PARKS, WE BUILD CONCRETE EDIFICES INSTEAD OF PARKS AND RECREATIONS PLACES, STREETS INSTEAD OF PEDESTRIANS WALKWAYS WITH TREES ALL OVER THE PLACE, OR IS IT JUST SO SIMPLE A SOLUTION WE DON'T WANT TO BE BOTHERED BY IT?

In Toronto, Canada there is already a tree planting program in place. Every year more are being planted. (Web link below)
Believe it or not...it starts with you. Begin with your mayor and see what s/he is willing to do for your town or city. Once a tree planting program is in place you can lobby with people from your school/work or other like minded individuals for it to happen in your state. Some environmentalists even run for office so that they can make a difference. You live in a democracy....go for it!!

Singapore had a unique problem. It is so small and so built up with things like roads and buildings that it heats up more than usual. Planting trees there makes a very large difference.

In a large nation with vast open spaces the problems are different and the solutions must be different. Planting more trees in US cities would make them a bit cooler and would be a good thing, but it's not a cure all.

Singapore has an area of about 700 square kilometers. It's about .01% as large as the US which has an area of about 9,600,000 square kilometers.

By the way, the US has more trees now than it did in 1900. People do plant trees here, a lot of them.

Since when was SIngapore the hottest place in SE Asia? And where on earth did you get your fact that people didnt want to live there?

I'd suggest you check your facts first before either slamming your own country for your perceived lack of environmental policies or commenting on other countries when you dont have the full story.

Many American cities are quite rich in foliage, places like Albuquerque are creating micro climate areas where shade lowers temperature and fountains raise humidity to give greater comfort, however to do that on a large scale, like foresting the South West would step on the toes of the desert protectors who consider the desert ecology to be worth preserving. Personally I would forest it and let the wee beasties have some comfort.

Well there is a shopping center near my home in Austin Texas that has grass and other plants planted on the roof. I don't know how much cooler it makes the stores; they were built only a few months ago and haven't gone through a hot summer yet.

the continental U.S.A is more than a 100 time larger than Singapore. This increases the level of difficulty.

Because fat, lazy Americans would have to get out of their climate controlled, gas guzzling SUV's to plant trees and that would require effort.
